How to choose turning tips and lathe accessories
Cutting tools and accessories are chosen by geometry first and size second. The geometry of a tip decides which cuts it can make at all; the size decides how much material it removes per pass and how hard it pulls on the tool bar and the lathe. All eight items in this category are HOLZMANN: six carbide turning tips, four of them titanium-coated and two eccentric clamping systems for the workpiece.
Round tips: Ø6, Ø12 and Ø16 mm
Round tips cut curves, and the radius sets the tightest curve a tip can follow. Ø6 mm is the detail size — narrow beads, tight coves and reach into places a larger radius cannot enter. Ø12 mm is the general round, the middle of the three sizes and the one that stays in the tool for most spindle and bowl work. Ø16 mm carries the longest curved edge and the most carbide mass of the three, which is why the Ø16 mm round is the roughing and hollowing choice when material has to come off quickly.
Square tips: 11.3 x 11.1 mm and 15 x 15 mm
Square tips cut flats, shoulders and straight tapers, and the choice between the two sizes is a choice about resistance. The 11.3 x 11.1 mm square puts less edge in the cut, so it pulls less on the bar — the right size for light tools and smaller lathes, and it ships in a noticeably smaller carton at 0.02 kg. The 15 x 15 mm square offers about a third more straight edge per side at 0.05 kg of carbide, and is the heavy-duty square for bringing larger blanks down to size on a machine that can take the load.
The pointed tip and the eccentric clamping systems
One tip in this range comes to a point: a 28 x 10 mm diamond, longer and narrower than any round or square cutter here, and the tip picked up for V-grooves, decorative lines and detail that a curved or straight edge cannot enter. The two eccentric clamping systems do a different job entirely — fixing heavy and unbalanced turning pieces on a wood lathe. ML 70 mm at Ø25 mm and 1 kg net is the compact one; ML 110 mm at Ø30 mm and 1.5 kg net adds 40 mm of length and 5 mm of diameter, and with them the stiffness that a longer overhang needs.
Fit, quantity, extraction and cost
Fit is confirmed before ordering rather than after. Check the published tip size and geometry against the seat and screw in the turning bar you already own, and send the bar designation or a photograph with the enquiry if there is any doubt, because a carbide tip is only useful in the holder it was made to sit in. Quantity matters as well: carbide tips are consumables, and a workshop that turns daily keeps spares on the shelf instead of ordering one at a time. Neither the tips nor the clamps draw power of their own — the lathe supplies it, so the single-phase or three-phase question belongs to the lathe rather than to the tooling. Extraction does apply: turning throws long shavings and fine dust, so pair the lathe with a collector whose hood sets the mouth directly behind the workpiece, and sand over a downdraft table rather than over the bench. Cost on these items follows geometry, size, carbide mass and coating, the quantity ordered and delivery, and every item here is supplied against a quotation.
