The HOLZMANN D460 is a stepped-pulley wood lathe for spindle turning up to 460 mm between centres with 130 mm centre height, which puts chair legs, balusters, tool handles and small bowls inside its working range. D460 runs a 600 W S6 / 400 W S1 motor on 230 V, so the lathe needs no three-phase connection and no special installation.
Five fixed speeds instead of an electronic drive
The defining feature of the D460 is its five-step belt drive: 600, 910, 1340, 1960 and 2800 rpm. Changing speed on the D460 means moving the POLY-V belt across the pulleys rather than turning a dial, which costs a minute at the machine but delivers full belt-driven torque at every step, and that is exactly what a turner wants when roughing an unbalanced blank at 600 rpm. Turners who change speed constantly, or who finish small-diameter work, should look at the variable-speed D460F instead.
Cast iron construction and tooling interfaces
The D460 is built on a grey cast iron bed with cast iron headstock, tailstock and tool rest, and stands on rubber feet to damp vibration. The tailstock on the D460 takes an MT2 taper with 55 mm quill travel and a quick-lock system, and the headstock spindle is M33 DIN 800, the common thread for aftermarket scroll chucks. A 300 mm extended tool rest with quick lock and a face plate of 145 mm diameter are part of the D460 specification.
Electrical classification and siting
HOLZMANN classes the D460 in electric filter class B, which means the lathe has to be EMC-protected if it is used in an urban area. That is worth raising early when the D460 is destined for a residential or mixed-use building. At 34 kg net the D460 is a bench machine, and mounting it on a heavy bench or a purpose-built stand improves surface finish more than any accessory will.
