The HOLZMANN MOBAS2 is the cheapest way into log milling, because the machine supplies everything except the engine. The MOBAS2 is a track and carriage system in which the operator’s existing chainsaw becomes the cutting head, so a log lying in a yard or on a hillside can be squared and sliced into boards without buying a powered sawmill. In its basic version the MOBAS2 track gives 2.1 m of cutting length.
How the MOBAS2 is set up and guided
Two support stands with log holder and clamp hold the log steady while the carriage travels the track. The chainsaw is fixed to the carriage using the supplied M8 adapter bolt, and an operating handle with a device for the throttle lever lets the sawyer guide the cut safely with both hands away from the bar. Board thickness is set with a hand crank running against a scale on the column, so successive boards come off at repeatable thicknesses instead of by eye.
Weight, transport and site work
The MOBAS2 weighs 58 kg net and measures 3100 x 1100 x 1230 mm in use, so it can be loaded into a pickup, carried in sections by two people and reassembled where the tree fell. That is roughly one third the weight of the lightest powered HOLZMANN head band saw, the BBS350 at 170 kg, and it is the reason the MOBAS2 goes places a band mill cannot.
How the MOBAS2 compares with the HOLZMANN band mills
The MOBAS2 trades speed, kerf and surface quality for portability and price. A chainsaw chain removes far more wood per cut than the 1.5-2.2 mm band kerf of the HOLZMANN BBS350 or BBS550SMART, and cutting is slower, so the MOBAS2 is a tool for occasional milling, slabs and self-supply rather than for production sawing. Anyone milling logs weekly should look at the BBS350 instead.
Who the MOBAS2 suits
The HOLZMANN MOBAS2 suits farms, foresters, carpenters and furniture makers in Georgia who already own a strong chainsaw and want occasional slabs, beams or boards from their own timber. The chainsaw itself is not included with the MOBAS2.
