Mortising drills – and why rotation direction matters
The LL6TLGL and LL6TLGR sets both cover 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm diameters, and the only difference between them is rotation: L is left-hand, R is right-hand. Slot-mortising units and boring heads drive their spindles in a fixed direction, and a right-hand bit in a left-hand spindle rubs, burns and eventually snaps rather than cutting. Check which way the spindle turns under power before you order. Multi-spindle boring machines often need both sets, because alternate spindles counter-rotate.
Square hollow chisel mortising
The STM26B square mortise bit and the STM4SB mortising device cut a genuine square-cornered mortise: the auger clears the waste while the hollow chisel around it pares the corners square. Size the chisel to the tenon, not to the stock, and leave the specified clearance between auger and chisel wall so heat and chips escape. A chisel set hard down against the auger scorches the timber and dulls fast.

What is the difference between an auger bit and a carbide universal bit?
They cut different holes. The SBS7TLG auger bits have a lead screw that pulls the bit into solid timber and a deep spiral that clears a long chip, which makes them the tool for deep through-holes. The FBS5TLG universal bits are carbide-tipped and cut a flat-bottomed hole with a clean rim, so they suit board material, hardwood, laminated and glued-up stock - the abrasive work that takes the edge off plain HSS quickly. If you need a stopped hole for hardware, use the universal bit; if you need to go right through a beam, use the auger.
How long do boring bits and drilling tools last?
It depends almost entirely on what you drill.
