Matching the unit to the machine
A mortising unit is a machine-specific casting, not a universal bolt-on. It mounts to the side of the planer-thicknesser, runs off that machine’s own motor and spindle, and slides on an X/Y compound table that has to sit at the correct height relative to the cutterblock. Mounting pattern, table height and drive coupling all differ between the ECO and PRO chassis, so the choice is made entirely by the machine you own: HOB260ECOLL for the HOB260ECO, HOB310ECOLL for the HOB310ECO, HOB305PROLL for the HOB305PRO family, HOB410PROLL for the HOB410PRO, and K5260LLL for the K5260 combination machine.
Identifying the machine you already own
Take the code from the silver rating plate on the machine body, not from an old invoice line or the way the machine is known in the shop. A width alone is not enough – a 410 mm planer can be an ECO or a PRO chassis, and only the PRO has a mortising unit listed here. Photograph the plate and send it with your enquiry and we will confirm the unit before anything ships.
Drills, chucks and mortise sizes
These units cut with a rotating drill held in a chuck, guided by the compound table, so slot width equals the bit diameter and a longer mortise is made from overlapping plunges walked along the X axis. Mortise length is limited by table travel and depth by quill stroke, both of which are set by the unit and the host machine rather than by the bit. HOB260ECOLL is supplied without a drill, so budget a bit set alongside it; mortising drill sets covering 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm are stocked in left-hand (LL6TLGL) and right-hand (LL6TLGR) rotation, and the rotation must match the spindle direction or the bit will rub instead of cut. Square hollow-chisel mortising is a different process on a different machine class – square bits such as STM26B and the STM4SB mortising device belong to dedicated mortisers, not to a planer-mounted unit.
Retrofit or order with the machine
All five units can be retrofitted to a machine already in the shop, but the cheapest moment to add one is with the original machine order: the unit travels on the same shipment and is fitted and aligned during commissioning. A retrofit means separate freight and, if you want it set up for you, a service visit to square the table to the fence and check the quill for play.
What goes wrong when the unit does not match
Forcing a unit built for another chassis onto your machine gives mounting holes that do not line up, a table sitting proud or low of the reference face, and mortises that wander out of parallel with the board face. Joinery cut this way will not close on a loose tenon. Confirm the model code first; it costs nothing and it is the single most common cause of a returned accessory.

It depends on the unit: HOB260ECOLL is listed as a mortising unit without a drill, so a bit set has to be ordered alongside it, while the other units are normally configured with a chuck and the bits that suit your joinery. Mortising drill sets covering 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm are stocked in left-hand (LL6TLGL) and right-hand (LL6TLGR) rotation, and the rotation must match your machine's spindle direction. State the dowel or loose-tenon diameters you work with and we will put the right bits in the same quotation as the unit.
What size mortises can a planer-mounted mortising unit cut?
On a mortising unit the slot width is set by the drill diameter, the slot length by how far the compound table travels on the X axis, and the depth by the quill stroke of that particular unit, so the practical range is fixed by the unit and its host machine rather than by the bit alone. A longer mortise is produced by overlapping plunges walked along the table travel. Tell us the joint sizes you cut most often and we will confirm, from the specification of the unit that fits your machine, whether they are within its travel.
Is a mortising unit the same as a hollow chisel mortiser?
No. A mortising unit on a planer-thicknesser bores with a rotating drill and produces a round-ended slot, which suits dowels and loose tenons. A hollow chisel mortiser drives a square chisel over a drill and produces a square-cornered mortise for a traditional through tenon; that work needs a dedicated mortiser and square bits such as STM26B or the STM4SB mortising device, which are separate products and do not fit these units. If your joinery needs square corners, ask us about a dedicated mortiser instead.
