Planer and thicknesser knives are the wearing edge of every surfacing and dimensioning pass, and they are the one consumable a planer cannot run without. This group covers the replacement sets we stock for Holzmann HOB planer-thicknessers and the K5260 combination machine: 32 SKUs in lengths of 250, 260, 305, 310, 320, 410 and 530 mm, widths from 19 to 35 mm, and thicknesses of 1, 2.5 and 3 mm, supplied as matched sets of two, three or four knives. Holzmann HOB-series planer-thicknessers (HOB260ECO, HOB305PRO, HOB310ECO, HOB410ECO and HOB410PRO) and the K5260 combination machine. 250-320 mm knives suit the 260, 305, 310 and 320 mm cutterblocks; 410 mm knives suit the HOB410 class and K5260; the 530 x 35 x 3 mm set is for the widest block in the range. Choosing the right planer and thicknesser knives
A planer knife is defined by three numbers – length x width x thickness – and by how many knives your cutterblock holds. Get all four right and the set drops straight into the block; get one wrong and it will not clamp.
Read the size off the knife you are replacing
Take one knife out and measure it. Length matches the cutterblock, which is normally the machine’s planing width: a 410 mm block takes 410 mm knives, a 305 mm block takes 305 mm. Width and thickness are what the gib and clamping wedge grip – 25, 30 and 35 mm wide at 3 mm thick are the common resharpenable sizes, and 260 x 20 x 2.5 mm covers the smallest machines in the range. Count the slots in the block too: sets ship as 2, 3 or 4 knives, and a block must be re-knifed as a complete set so the cutting circle stays balanced.
Resharpenable HSS or disposable reversible knives
3 mm HSS knives can be reground several times until the width falls below the block’s adjustment range, which suits shops with access to a knife grinder. The 410 x 19 x 1 mm TriHSS and TriSolid knives are double-edged throwaways: loosen, flip or replace, retighten – no setting gauge and no grinding. TriSolid carries the harder edge for abrasive, resinous or reclaimed stock; TriHSS is the general-purpose choice.
When to change, and what a dull knife costs you
Change when you see fuzzy grain, a glazed or burnished surface, or a raised line running down the board from a nick. Cutting past that point rubs instead of slicing: it loads the motor, scorches the surface and forces extra sanding that eats the time the planer was meant to save. Fitting one new knife against two worn ones, or mixing knives of unequal width, throws the cutting circle out and leaves a visible wave in the finish.
Spiral cutterheads as the alternative
If you re-knife often, ask about the spiral cutterhead version of the HOB305PRO. Indexable carbide inserts are rotated one at a time rather than replaced as a set, tear-out on figured timber drops, and a nick costs one insert instead of a whole set of knives.

How do I identify the right planer and thicknesser knives for a machine I already own?
Remove one planer knife from the cutterblock and measure it: length, width and thickness in millimetres, then count how many knives the block holds. That gives you the full specification - for example 410 x 30 x 3 mm, set of three. Our planer and thicknesser knives are listed on exactly those figures, so match them and the set will fit. If the machine is a Holzmann, send us the model code (HOB260ECO, HOB305PRO, HOB410PRO, K5260 and so on) with your enquiry and we will confirm the correct knife set for you.
Can I replace just one planer knife instead of the whole set?
No. Planer and thicknesser knives must be changed as a complete matched set. Each knife in the block has to project the same distance so all of them cut the same circle; a single new knife running alongside two or three worn ones takes a heavier bite, leaves a visible wave in the surface and puts the cutterblock out of balance. That is why we supply these knives only as sets of two, three or four to match the block.
How often do planer and thicknesser knives need changing?
There is no fixed hour figure - planer and thicknesser knives are consumed by what you feed them. Clean softwood may run for many hours, while chipboard, MDF, glued-up panels, exotic hardwoods or timber carrying grit will dull an edge in a fraction of that. Judge by the work: fuzzy grain, a glazed or burnished surface, rising motor load or a raised line down the board all say the edge is gone. Resharpenable 3 mm HSS knives can be reground several times; TriHSS and TriSolid reversible knives are flipped once and then replaced.
What is the difference between TriHSS and TriSolid knives?
Both are 410 x 19 x 1 mm disposable double-edged planer knives for quick-change cutterblocks, supplied in sets of four, and both remove the need for a setting gauge or a grinder. TriHSS is the general-purpose grade for everyday softwood and hardwood planing. TriSolid carries a harder, more wear-resistant edge and is the one to specify for abrasive or resinous timber, glued-up stock and reclaimed material where a standard edge would dull quickly.
Do these knives fit a spiral cutterhead?
No. Straight planer and thicknesser knives fit conventional cutterblocks only. A spiral cutterhead, such as the one on the HOB305PRO spiral version, uses small indexable carbide inserts arranged in a helix; when an edge dulls you loosen one screw and rotate that insert to a fresh corner. The two systems are not interchangeable. If you are re-knifing frequently, ask us to quote the spiral cutterhead machine alongside the knife sets so you can compare running cost.
