How to choose a combined planer thicknesser

Planing width decides the model. A combined planer thicknesser cannot flatten a board wider than its tables, and gluing up narrow strips because the machine is too small costs more in labour every week than the wider machine cost once. HOLZMANN splits this range into three practical widths: 250-260 mm for window and furniture components, 304-310 mm for door stiles and most cabinet stock, and 410 mm for glued panels and wide boards.

Thicknessing height matters as much as width

Thicknessing height is where the range genuinely splits. The HOB260 machines stop between 160 and 195 mm, which covers ordinary furniture stock, while the HOB305PRO, HOB305PROSMW2, HOB310ECO, HOB310ECOSMW2, HOB410ECO and HOB410ECOSMW2 reach 225 mm and the HOB410PROSMW4 reaches 230 mm. If you machine stair strings, beams or laminated blanks on edge, check that height before anything else.

Straight knives or a spiral insert head

The SMW models earn their extra cost on difficult timber. A spiral head carries small indexable carbide inserts – 20 on the HOB260ECOSMW2, 24 on the HOB305PROSMW2, 28 on the HOB305ABSSMW2, 30 on the HOB310ECOSMW2, 44 on the HOB410ECOSMW2 and 68 on the HOB410PROSMW4 – which shear the grain instead of chopping it and can each be turned to a fresh edge rather than replacing a full knife set. Straight-knife machines run faster and cost less: the HOB305ABS feeds at 8.3 m/min and takes 2 mm per pass, against 6 m/min and 1.6 mm on the otherwise matched HOB305ABSSMW2. Choose straight knives for softwood and clean pine work, and a spiral head if you routinely run beech, oak or figured hardwood where tear-out means hand sanding afterwards.

Single-phase or three-phase power

Power supply eliminates models quickly. The smaller machines are the ones with a single-phase route: the HOB260ABS is offered in a 230 V version and the HOB310ECO is listed with a single-phase option. The wide machines are three-phase – the HOB410ECO runs a 4000 W S1 motor on 400 V, the HOB410N a 4200 W S6, the HOB410PRO a 5.5 kW S6 (40%) on 400 V and the HOB410PROSMW4 a 5500 W S6. If your workshop has only a 230 V supply, a 410 mm machine means paying an electrician before it can be switched on, and that cost belongs in the comparison.

Floor space and dust extraction

Floor space for a combined planer thicknesser is not the footprint, it is the footprint plus twice your longest board. Weight tells the rest of the story: the HOB260MINI is 72 kg, the HOB310ECO 179.5 kg, the HOB410ECOSMW2 295 kg, and the HOB410PRO and HOB410PROSMW4 are 420 kg machines that want a solid floor and a pallet truck. Extraction is not optional on any of them, because a planer produces shavings faster than anything else in a joinery. The HOB260ABS is the exception that carries a 270 m³/h dust collector built in; every other model here needs a chip extractor sized for its port, quoted at the same time as the machine.

What to budget beyond the machine

Budget the tooling and the setup, not only the machine. Straight-knife models consume replacement knife sets – the HOB305ABS uses 308 x 2.5 x 20 mm knives – and need a setting gauge, while spiral models consume individual carbide inserts. Add ducting and an extractor, infeed and outfeed supports for long stock, and the electrical connection on three-phase models. Price is driven by planing width, thicknessing height, cutterblock type, frame construction, the tooling package, delivery and installation, so ask for a quotation that itemises those.
