Sanding machines take a machined or glued-up surface to its finished state, from truing a small mitre on a disc to calibrating a wide panel to uniform thickness. This category holds 25 HOLZMANN sanders in five families: benchtop belt-and-disc machines (BT, TS305, TSM250), oscillating edge belt sanders (KOS), oscillating spindle sanders (OSS, OBS100A), 200 mm drum sanding machines (PSM2, PSM3) and drum calibrating sanders (ZS) from 400 up to 970 mm wide. Every machine is quoted individually with its abrasive package, delivery and extraction requirements. Decide the family from the surface you sand, then the model from width, thickness capacity and mains supply.

Pick the family of sander before you pick the model

The family decides more than the model does. Benchtop belt-and-disc machines – the BT range plus the TS305 and TSM250 disc sanders – shape and true small parts held by hand against a table. Oscillating edge belt sanders, the KOS models, sand long edges and curves on frames and standing panels with a belt that moves up and down as it runs, so the abrasive wears evenly and does not burn. Oscillating spindle sanders, the OSS models and the OBS100A, clean internal curves and cut-outs that no flat table can reach. Drum calibrating sanders, the ZS models, take glued-up panels to a uniform thickness. The PSM2 and PSM3 are 200 mm drum sanding machines rated IP 55.

Sizing a drum calibrating sander

Sanding width is set by the widest panel you glue up, because a panel wider than the drum has to be turned and sanded in two overlapping passes. Thickness capacity is the number that catches buyers out: the ZS400U sands 400 mm wide and passes stock from 5 to 130 mm thick, while the ZS560U trades that down to 80 mm to gain 160 mm of width on the same 2250 W S6 motor and 132 mm drum. Above those, the ZS635NEO runs two 127 mm drums across 630 mm at 7 to 125 mm thick, the ZS640P works 640 mm wide from 7 to 127 mm, and the ZS970P carries coarse and fine abrasive on two drums across 970 mm and swallows stock up to 304 mm thick.

Single-phase or three-phase supply

Mains supply removes models from the shortlist quickly. Every BT bench machine, the TS305, the TSM250, the PSM2, the PSM3, the ZS400U, the ZS560U and the ZS560FU are 230 V machines. The KOS2600C, the KOS3000C and the OSS200 are 400 V only, the KOS2510N is catalogued in both 230 V and 400 V, the ZS635NEO is the only ZS offered in 400 V, and the ZS640P is available as a single-phase machine. Check the supply at the intended machine position before the quotation is issued.

Floor space and extraction

Extraction is not optional on a sander. Sanding produces respirable dust rather than chips, so each machine needs a connection sized to its port and an extractor with enough airflow to serve every port at once – the TSM250 has a 35 mm port, the TS305 a 53 mm port, and the KOS3000C a double dust collection system feeding both the sanding unit and the table. Edge belt sanders need clear floor on both sides for the length of the workpiece, not just the machine footprint, and drum calibrating sanders need infeed and outfeed room equal to the longest panel.

Abrasives and what separates the cheap end from the dear end

Abrasives are the running cost and are budgeted separately: belts, discs and sleeves in several grits, replaced far more often than any other part. The ZS635NEO arrives with K80 and K100 belts fitted and the OSS75A with six K80 sleeves from 15 to 78 mm, but a working shop stocks spares from day one. Between the cheap and dear ends of this category the money buys duty rating rather than a different result – continuous S1 output against short-time S6, cast iron tables against pressed steel, an independent oscillation motor on the KOS2600C, frequency-controlled drum speed on the ZS560FU, and two drums instead of one on the ZS635NEO and ZS970P.

Small parts held by hand
Choose a benchtop belt-and-disc machine: BT75 for narrow slots and small radii, BT46ECO or BT150-914 for general bench work, BT203-914 or BT1220TOP where a larger disc helps on end grain.
Long edges on frames and standing panels
Choose an oscillating edge belt sander (KOS). Belt length runs from 2260 mm on the KOS2260C to 3000 mm on the KOS3000C - match it to the length of the edges you sand.
Internal curves and cut-outs
Choose an oscillating spindle sander: OSS75A for occasional work and sleeves up to 78 mm, OSS200 for continuous three-phase use, OBS100A when you also want a 610 x 100 mm flat belt.
Sanding width 400-560 mm
Sizing drawer fronts, doors and narrow tops. The ZS400U covers 400 mm, the ZS560U and ZS560FU 560 mm; a panel wider than the drum has to be turned and passed twice.
Sanding width 630-970 mm
Full cabinet sides and wide glued-up tops. ZS635NEO at 630 mm, ZS640P at 640 mm, ZS970P at 970 mm - the widest single-pass capacity in this category.
Workpiece thickness above 80 mm
Check thickness before width: the ZS560U caps at 80 mm, the ZS400U reaches 130 mm, the ZS640P 127 mm and the ZS970P 304 mm for laminated worktop and beam stock.
Motor rating S1 or S6
S1 is continuous duty and S6 is intermittent. For back-to-back production choose the higher S1 figure - the BT1220 at 750 W S1 / 1125 W S6, the KOS2600C at 3000 W S1 / 4200 W S6.
230 V or 400 V supply
Bench machines, PSM2, PSM3, ZS400U, ZS560U and ZS560FU are 230 V. KOS2600C, KOS3000C and OSS200 need 400 V; KOS2510N and ZS640P are catalogued in both.

Which type of sander do I need - belt and disc, oscillating, or drum?
Choose the sander family from the surface you are sanding. A benchtop belt-and-disc machine (BT, TS305, TSM250) trues small parts held by hand. An oscillating edge belt sander (KOS) sands long edges and gentle curves on frames and panels. An oscillating spindle sander (OSS, OBS100A) reaches internal curves and cut-outs. A drum calibrating sander (ZS) brings a glued-up panel to uniform thickness. Most furniture workshops end up with a bench machine plus one of the larger types.
How do I choose the right sanding width on a ZS drum sander?
Set the sanding width of a drum sander from the widest panel you glue up, because anything wider has to be turned and passed twice with an overlap. The ZS400U covers 400 mm, the ZS560U and ZS560FU 560 mm, the ZS635NEO 630 mm, the ZS640P 640 mm and the ZS970P 970 mm. Check thickness capacity at the same time: the ZS560U stops at 80 mm, while the ZS400U takes 130 mm, the ZS640P 127 mm and the ZS970P 304 mm.
Which sanders run on 230 V single-phase power?
Most of the smaller sanders in this category run on 230 V single-phase. The BT bench machines, the TS305, the TSM250, the PSM2, the PSM3, the ZS400U, the ZS560U and the ZS560FU are single-phase, and the KOS2510N and ZS640P are catalogued in both 230 V and 400 V. The KOS2600C, the KOS3000C, the OSS200 and the ZS635NEO need a 400 V three-phase supply. Confirm the supply at the machine position before the quotation is prepared.
How much space and what dust extraction do sanders need?
Sanders need extraction more than any other woodworking machine, because sanding produces fine respirable dust rather than chips. Size the extractor to serve every port you intend to run at once - the TSM250 has a 35 mm port, the TS305 a 53 mm port, and the KOS3000C a double collection system feeding both the sanding unit and the table. For floor space, edge belt sanders need clear room on both sides for the full length of the workpiece, and drum sanders need infeed and outfeed room equal to the longest panel.
What do I have to budget for besides the sander itself?
Abrasives are the main ongoing cost of any sander and are not part of the machine. Budget belts, discs and spindle sleeves in at least two grits, plus spares, from the start: the ZS635NEO arrives with K80 and K100 belts fitted and the OSS75A with six K80 sleeves from 15 to 78 mm, but those are starting sets. Also budget the extractor, ducting and hose, and a stand or bench for the smaller machines.
What makes one sander cost more than another?
The price of a sander is driven by configuration and duty rather than by brand: sanding width and thickness capacity, one drum or two, continuous S1 motor rating against intermittent S6, cast iron tables and heavier frames, and refinements such as the independent oscillation motor on the KOS2600C or the frequency-controlled drum speed on the ZS560FU. The abrasive package, the extraction equipment specified alongside, delivery to your site and installation also form part of the quotation. Tell us panel width, thickness and mains supply and we will quote the right machine.
