How to choose a boring or mortising machine

Choose by the joint the machine has to make, not by the motor rating. The seven HOLZMANN machines here fall into three families doing different work.

Row and dowel boring for cabinet carcases

Row boring suits flat-pack and cabinet production. The DBM21N drills up to 21 holes in one stroke at the 32 mm system pitch across a 640 mm span, to 50 mm deep, on the grid European cabinet fittings use. The BBSM50AUTO instead bores the complete dowel-plus-eccentric-cam pattern automatically in two work steps, one per joint half, in panels up to 50 mm thick.

Slot mortising for frames and doors

Slot mortisers cut the round-ended slot used with a loose tenon or dowel. Drilling width is 290 mm on the LBM290 and LBM290K and 250 mm on the LBM250C; depth separates them, at 140 mm, 155 mm and 215 mm.

Hollow chisel mortising for square-ended joints

Hollow chisel mortisers produce the square-cornered mortise a traditional tenon needs. The STM26 and STM26S take chisels from 6 to 26 mm, cut to 76 mm deep and accept stock up to 210 mm thick; they differ only in table size, 400 x 150 mm against 540 x 230 mm.

Capacity: size on your thickest part

Depth decides the purchase more often than width. Through-mortises in heavy gate or door stock need the 215 mm of the LBM250C, while cabinet rails and window components sit inside the 140 mm of the LBM290. The DBM21N takes workpieces up to 80 mm thick on an 870 x 550 mm table, the BBSM50AUTO panel stock up to 50 mm on an 800 x 320 mm table.

Single-phase or three-phase supply

Power supply eliminates machines before capacity does. The STM26 and STM26S run from an ordinary 230 V single-phase socket, and the LBM290 and LBM290K come in 230 V as well as 400 V versions. The LBM250C, DBM21N and BBSM50AUTO are 400 V three-phase only. Confirm the version code at quotation, since the two variants are separate machines.

Floor space, compressed air and chip extraction

Plan the position before delivery. Weights run from 86 kg for the STM26 to 341.5 kg for the DBM21N, which needs a forklift and a permanent bay on a firm level floor. The LBM290K stays at 140 kg but reaches a 2600 x 1530 mm envelope with its extension tables. Compressed air is a hard requirement on two models: 6 to 8 bar for the DBM21N and 0.6 to 0.8 MPa for the BBSM50AUTO. Boring and mortising throw chips rather than fine dust, so plan a collection point at the machine; ask us to confirm the extraction connection.

Tooling is a separate budget line

Cutting tools are usually not part of the machine price. Mortise bits, hollow chisels and dowel drills for the LBM250C are supplied separately, and drill bits for all 21 spindles of the DBM21N are a separate cost. The BBSM50AUTO is the exception, delivered with its drill bits and cutters.

Entry machines against the top of the range

The difference is mass, duty rating and repeatability, not hole size. The STM26 and LBM290 are light, single-phase-capable machines for batch work. The LBM290K adds a 5300 W (S6) two-speed head at 1400 and 2800 min-1 so large bits in oak do not stall. The LBM250C puts 205 kg of grey cast iron behind a 215 mm cut and pivots its head for angled work, and the DBM21N replaces hole-by-hole drilling with a foot-pedal cycle that clamps, drills and releases. Buy the heavier machine when the operation repeats daily.
