How to choose a dust collector for a woodworking shop

Choose a dust collector from the port sizes and the duct run in front of it, not from the number of machines on paper. A single-machine collector such as the ABS850, ABS1080 or ABS1500FF is built for one Ø100 mm hood on a short hose. A ducted workshop needs a large trunk port and high static pressure – the ABS3000SE, ABS4560, ABS5000SE, ABS8000PRO or ABS7500MF class – because pressure, not the airflow figure on the label, is what survives a pipe run full of bends and blast gates.

Read airflow and static pressure together

Airflow and static pressure do two different jobs. Airflow in m³/h moves the volume of air; static pressure in Pa pushes that air down a long, restricted duct. On a short hose into a planer, airflow decides: the ABS850 gives 850 m³/h at 800 Pa, the ABS1500FF 1500 m³/h at 1020 Pa. On a fixed installation, pressure decides: the ABS7500MF reaches 3835 Pa on a 280 mm port, the ABS8000PRO 2800 Pa. Compare the ABS3880 at 3880 m³/h and 1750 Pa with the ABS4560 at 4560 m³/h and 2500 Pa to see how differently two similar machines behave on a trunk line.

Single-phase or three-phase supply?

Power supply removes several dust collectors from the shortlist before airflow does. The ABS850, ABS850DBK, ABS1080, ABS1500FF, ABS2200FLEX, ABS2480, ABS3880, ABS4000 and ABS4500MF run on 230 V single-phase, and several are also offered as a 400 V variant; the ABS3000SE comes in both. The ABS4500MF is the one unit above 4000 m³/h that stays on 230 V, at 4500 m³/h and 2690 Pa. The MABS750, ABS4560, ABS5000SE, ABS7500MF, ABS8000PRO, FAN2200 and FAN4000 are 400 V three-phase only.

Ceiling height, floor space and noise

Measure ceiling height before choosing a bag collector, because the bag column is the usual surprise: the ABS8000PRO stands 2800 mm, the ABS5000SE 2470 mm, the ABS2480 2430 mm and the ABS3000SE 2200 mm, each needing clearance above to change the bag. For a low shop the ABS4000 adjusts to a maximum of 1950 mm, and the ABS2200FLEX is 750 mm tall on a 1540 x 550 mm chassis that slides under a machine table. Noise follows size: the ABS850DBK stays under 70 dB(A) sound pressure and the ABS3000SE, ABS5000SE and ABS8000PRO under 85 dB(A), while large bag units sit near 87 to 90 dB(A).

What you budget separately

Budget the system around the dust collector, not only the collector. Ducting, hose, blast gates, clamps, reducers and the electrical work for a 400 V machine are separate items. Chip bags and filter elements are consumables: the ABS4500MF carries an 18-element block of 8.46 m², the ABS7500MF a 35-element block of 16.45 m². The FAN2200 (200/180 mm, 4000 m³/h) and FAN4000 (full-bore Ø250/Ø250, 6500 m³/h) are fan bodies rather than complete collectors, bought to drive a separator or filter housing specified around them.

What separates the cheap end from the expensive end

The distance from the ABS850 to the ABS8000PRO is duty, not just size. The ABS850 is a 750 W, 23 kg mobile unit with one Ø100 mm port and a 40 l bag, for one machine at a time. The ABS8000PRO is a 4500 W, 93 kg fixed installation whose Ø250 mm outlet divides into three Ø125 mm and one Ø100 mm connection, with the suction connection selectable top or bottom.
