The HOLZMANN STM26 cuts the joint that a slot mortiser cannot. A hollow chisel mortiser such as the STM26 produces a true square-ended mortise, which is what a traditional tenon joint in a door, window, gate or table frame actually requires, and the STM26 takes chisels from 6 mm right up to 26 mm so almost every furniture and joinery mortise size is covered by one machine.
Accuracy from the guides
The STM26 holds its line because the head runs on adjustable dovetail guides rather than round columns. Dovetail guidance on the STM26 is adjustable for wear, so a chisel entering a hard oak stile is held square instead of deflecting, and the machine is built on a bending-resistant cast iron setup that resists the considerable side load a chisel generates. Adjustable depth stops on the STM26 give high repeating accuracy across a batch of identical parts.
How the STM26 feels to use
Effort is where the STM26 differs from cheaper mortisers. One-hand operation on the STM26 is supported by a gas pressure cylinder that carries part of the plunge force, so an operator cutting a hundred mortises is not fighting the lever all day, and large hand wheels make table adjustment quick between setups. Two workpiece down-holders with quick adjustment keep the stock from lifting as the chisel withdraws, which is where mortise walls usually get damaged.
